Sounds really complex and impossible to do anything in 60 seconds, doesn’t it?
I mean what could you realistically do or achieve in 60 seconds? What dreams that you put on hold could you realistically complete in 60 seconds? What could you do to live to the fullest your last 60 seconds on earth without having ANY regrets? Breathe? Speak? I mean, I know Flash is fast but I think even he would have some difficulty living up those 60 seconds, right? 60 seconds. One minute. What brought me to think of this question have been a combination of recent life challenges and a friend’s visit to the psychiatrist. The psychiatrist my friend was seeing was charging visitors what we both considered to be a bargain price: half the price of a hour-long session (let’s say $60) to have a thirty-minute session. Basically, the psychiatrist was charging X dollars per minute. So while my friend was being seen for his PTSD, I was having an epiphany in the reception. If you only had a minute to live, what would you do? What COULD you do? And what price would you pay or get paid for another minute? The reality is that it would be difficult to do a lot in 60 seconds than if you were given twenty-four hours to do all that you would have done if you never held back on life. Twenty-four hours is a lot if you think about it and use the time wisely. I mean I’ve discovered and enjoyed a city with only a twelve-hour layover. However, 60 seconds...now that’s a tough thought. Then I did what I think anyone would do when you have an epiphany like such. I tried to do something great in 60 seconds. Sure enough, given my location at the time, I physically wasn’t able to do much. I think the most I managed to achieve was to get up from my seat, smile at the receptionist, and remark about the current weather conditions. The rest of the remaining seconds were of thought. In those thoughts, I found my answer. Nowadays, you will find a lot of inspiring/motivating statements ranging from “Carpe Diem” or “Get out of the job you hate” or “Reasons to face the unknown”. Although those have been inspiring/motivating articles and quotes, I will not disagree, I don’t think they get to the root of the matter. You can seize the day and not feel fulfilled. You can quit your job to pursue your dreams and feel doubt in the process. You can live today as your last and not feel as if you accomplished much. Some may argue such is the process of life. However, the only thing that you will feel those last 60 seconds of life are the positive emotional connections and actions you did or didn’t do while you were alive. When we die, it’s been said that our life flashes before our eyes, our hearts beat a little slower, and our breathing becomes a little shallow. Breathing, I concluded, that’s pretty much the only thing we can do in our last 60 seconds of life. Breathe and hug those we hold dear. Maybe even watch our past play before our eyes while hoping for a better future of our loved ones who carry on. Whenever life seems to bring you down and things just aren’t going the way you want take a minute to breathe. In that minute all the past situations and circumstances that burdened you will fade and if you’re so lucky you get another minute... and maybe another, then another. The intent here isn’t to bring morbid thoughts about life; instead, it’s to spark something within, whatever it may be, to take charge of the now. So what would you do with your last 60 seconds? What would you think? What would you feel? What would you regret? What would you want your last breath taken away by? People always ask what would you do if you were only given 24 hours to live. I think the real question to ask this New Year should be, what would you do/be if you only had a minute to live?
