"One of the secrets to success and happiness I have a chimp inside me. It’s true. I never knew it until now. Since fully accepting and acknowledging the little guy, my approach has shifted, hopefully for the better. I say little guy, but the chimp is actually a massive part of my everyday function. Sometimes he gets out of control and sometimes I can control the little guy; just depends who manages to receive the information first. I received the book The Chimp Paradox: The Mind Management Programme for Confidence, Success, and Happiness as a Christmas gift from my partner, who is an eyewitness of my attempts to find new books to read. I am not an avid reader by any means, but every year I try to read at least one book a month; this year my goal is to increase this to at least one book a week. Therefore, I will attempt to review some the books I have read throughout the year. Dive into the Paradox"The Chimp Paradox is an incredibly powerful mind management model that can help you become a happy, confident, healthier and more successful person. Prof Steve Peters explains the struggle that takes place within your mind and then shows how to apply this understanding to every area of your life so you can: The above is an excerpt of the book’s summary from the Amazon link:
As someone who gained a deep interest in neurology a few years back I can say this book describes the neurological process of the brain to a simplistic level, which allows the reader to understand human thought processes without feeling patronized. At the beginning of the book we are introduced to “the Human”, “the Computer”, and the most famous and notorious, “the Chimp”. "The Human" being our responsible selves, "the computer" being our data storage, and then there’s "the Chimp"; our emotional friend who acts out on everything it feels. Without giving too much of the book away, I’ll try to provide an honest book review. However, the last book review I did was in high school, so we’ll see how this goes. Through use of powerful analogy and synonyms, the reader is explained how each “character” relates to the area of function in the brain, which is something I thoroughly enjoyed. The way the concepts of how the brain works was seamlessly brought together with each chapter increasing an insight into the depths of an individual’s mind. In order to help the reader understand the brain in a simplistic manner, the book uses planets to illustrate the idea of containers in the brain. I believe this comparison helps us find the relation between the “social beings” that are found in each planet and connects us to aspects of our individual wellbeing. The way it is illustrated is like our solar system. The center being the sun, which in his example, is our self fulfilment. The planets then represent our health, emotions, success, confidence, relationships, to name a few, which all orbit around the sun. Towards the end, the book summarizes your journey of understanding "the self”. This is achieved by wrapping up each planet and proving methods or tasks that each individual can strive for, to improve their Chimp’s behavior, essentially managing their own Chimp. For those readers who would like to dive deeper into the science of The Chimp Model, the book also offers a section dedicated to the science and terminology associated to each character. As someone who is constantly striving to improve aspects of my life, I would say this book is definitely an essential read and as it offers a gentler approach to the self. This book is especially great for those readers who are interested in working on their mindset, as it provides the cause, effect, and result of our thinking. In order to fully understand and appreciate the book, the book should be read at a leisurely pace to absorb the information being provided. I have a feeling this will be a go to book that I will reread in the years to come. "Sharing food with another human being is an intimate Awww, Valentine's Day. I can't actually remmeber a proper Valentine's Day since this recent one. The reality is that I am usually working and don’t make the time to go out and do stuff, yet alone try to organize events with other people outside of work. Writing this has made me realize I should probably look at changing fields and leaving the services sector. However...I digress. If you’re looking for options this Valentine's Day and happen to be in the Lake District in England, might I suggest Fellinis. There are two main vegetarian restaurants in Ambleside in the Lake District, one that is more of a Jazz bar and the other that is just fine dining. My partner and I opted for the dinner service at Fellinis since we didn’t really fancy a show and just wanted to enjoy each other’s company whilst chatting about our time in the Lake District. Anyone who’s been to the Lake District knows there are a variety of things to do, ranging from visiting the Beatrix Potter (Peter Rabbit) Museum, enjoying the gorgeous lake views, or taking leisurely walks in the surrounding the area. I’d definitely recommend the Lake District to anyone who has never been. "Fellinis is a modern 'Vegeterranean' restaurant catering for the most discerning palate with a distinct Mediterranean twist. Above the restaurant a state of the art digital cinema shows the latest arthouse and niche film productions with live satellite links to world class events of Opera, Ballet and Theatre" ![]() Basically, this place is a vegetarian's dream as there are no worries about cross contamination with meat since it is solely a vegetarian restaurant. Throughout our 3-course meal each plate was exquisitely crafted for our vegetarian needs which complimented well with our wine. The best part was how reasonably priced the overall experience was and how amazingly attentive the wait staff were. As the plates were brought to the table I was amazed at how beautifully they were presented and I almost didn’t want to eat them; so I took pictures for memory. However, I did cave and every bite was an explosion of flavour in the mouth. As the night slowly drew to a close and the restaurant's patrons departed, we found ourselves still with wine leftover. In order to be polite, we were going to leave our drink; however, we were pleasantly surprised when the wait staff insisted that we take our time and enjoy our wine.
No matter your party size, if it’s a table for two or a larger group, you can’t go wrong with this vegetarian restaurant and I would definitely recommend Fellinis. Fellinis is truly a first class restaurant, with amazing service, great food, and all for reasonable price. For more information or to book a table visit Fellinis' website. #MobileFeasts #ValentinesDay #Vegetarian #WildIsadora #Isadoraland This article is not sponsored by the restaurant nor does it reflect the views of the restaurant or represents the restaurant in anyway. "People who love to eat are always the best people." I guess that makes me good people, eh? I love to eat great food, however, more than that, I love to have a great dining experience. With today’s hustle and bustle it seems almost impossible to have the time to enjoy a good meal, yet alone cook a good meal. Add to the mix, having a special diet requirement can make this task even harder. Being a vegetarian for a decade now (five of those being vegan before it was cool), I am pleased to see the increase of awareness surrounding the daily nutrients required to sustain our overall health, this includes our mental health. I am even more impressed when I discover a fine dining establishment that offers nutritious options for people like my partner and I, who are both vegeterians. . So when my partner had arranged my first ever proper English afternoon tea at Panoramic 34 with veggie options, I was over the moon! Even more so because I had lived in the UK for several years and had never (that I can recall) experienced a proper English afternoon tea. Topped off by good company, which consisted of my partner and her family. The views are amazing; however, the food was what captivated my attention. ![]() Now for anyone who likes to eat in massive portions, I will forewarn that afternoon tea is not a massive portion affair. Afternoon tea is meant to be bite size portions with lashings of English tea. Please see above image. At Panoramic 34 you have two options for afternoon tea, a regular afternoon tea or luxury afternoon tea; I believe a luxury afternoon tea includes a fizzy alcoholic drink with your meal. Usually, my partner and I would’ve gone for a luxury experience; however, we opted for the regular option as we had errands to attend to right after. However, if you do decide to have the luxury meal, you can sit with a glass of bubbly and enjoy the views to your hearts content (or reservation time limit). The attentive waiting staff are on hand to ensure your delicious food is available quickly and your drinks have been topped up throughout your dining experience. As for the kid options, the restaurant pretty much reflected the same meal options as the adult’s regular afternoon tea; however, just in smaller portions with sandwiches less elaborate and prepared to a child’s palate. Should your child not like a specific sandwich filling, the restaurant can change the selection without an extra cost. As the sun set on the restaurant, we were able to take my partner’s nieces around the restaurant to take in all the views of Liverpool and give them a perspective of where they were. As pictures were being taken, I was reminded of the dining experiences I had as a child and how grateful I was to have had them.
The food was great, the views were amazing, and the company that afternoon was even better. Overall, that is the recipe for a great dining experience…no matter where you are in the world. "The day in Australia when I saw 500 dead animals for every live one Giving is said to be one of the keys to achieve success and happiness in life. Even Jim Rohn, author and motivational speaker, recommends donating 10% of your income in his 70/30 finance rule*. There are a variety of methods of giving. Giving can be a smile, a laugh, or acknowledging someone’s existence. Whatever the case, there is always an opportunity to give. Today is no exception. Although the well-publicized event "Giving Tuesday" does not occur until later in the year, charities do not only need support once a year. Therefore, allow me to showcase some of the charities and/or events that I know of that will be occurring throughout the year. Take, for example, the #KoalaComeback campaign that was launched by photographer David Yarrow and environmental non-profit organization WildArk, in an effort “to raise $2 million to support recovery efforts in Australia.” According to the #KoalaComeback campaign website: "Fifty percent of the proceeds will be directed to Earth Alliance’s Australia Wildfire Fund, With all the events that have occurred in a short amount of time in this new decade, the wildfires of Australia have carried on from the last decade and continue to burn. A stark reality that sometimes the littlest of things, whether good or bad, can have a lasting effect for years to come.
If you would like to know more about the #KoalaComeback campaign, please visit their website at koalacomeback.com. Alternatively, you can visit the WildArk website for this and other donation campaigns at wildark.org. Any contributions are welcome. Since donation is something that should align with your own set of personal values, this charity might not be your cuppa tea. However, even if it’s not please still share as there may be some of your friends/followers who would be interested. Because sharing is caring and I believe, deep down, we all care. *Rohn, J. Vain, perhaps, if not completely. However, the name wasn't chosen for the mere vanity more than it was for what the name represents and where the concept derived from. A long, long time ago, I can still remember...sorry slightly digressing. About a decade ago I had a drastic change in my life. Ok, maybe that’s dramatic, but for a teenager at the time it was drastic. I managed to move, by myself, to a different country without any form of a support network and managed to explore a world that was completely foreign. To “cultured” individuals that may not seem like a big difference, but for somebody who was raised in the deep south and the farthest they've ever moved away from home was two hours or a few states away; it was life changing. When I first arrived to the UK, it was bittersweet. Eventually, though, I got an American flatmate, whom together, we managed to understand a little more of such foreign land. *cue in exploring land tune* An overload of ideas, thoughts, and connections started occurring whilst we ventured around, finding exciting new venues to hang out at and learned a bit of the local lingo along the way. So much explosion of creativity occurred that sometimes I would venture away with creativity in my mind and forget about what the conversation was. Non-attentive? Perhaps. Dosing off in my mind became such a norm that every time I wasn't attentive to the conversation, my American flatmate would jest that I was in isadoraland. Mean? Cruel? Wrong? Not sure. Really could care less though; it was a pretty good concept. People usually go off in their own thoughts of daily activities, they forget to pay attention sometimes. Therefore, the thought of giving such creative occasion a name, seemed appropriate. So, I present to you, not a website entirely about me, as the title suggests, but more a website of the creative influences that drive most of my creative processes. The creativity that surrounds us on a daily basis which can become a huge catalyst in our individual creative thinking. The projects that provide insight into topics not usually discussed. The list goes on and on.
Overall, the ideal is to provide positive exposure and feel good vibes with collaborative content ranging from videos to photos to some of my personal work as well. All in an effort to receive genuine feedback and understanding of the beautiful creative content that surrounds us. This is the place you’ll mostly find me; with occasional visits to the outside world. Hopefully I've explained a little of what this site is about. Maybe I'm being too vain. Maybe I'm not. Honestly who cares, it's just another site in the world of digital noise. |
