I have a chimp inside me. 
 
It’s true. 
 
I never knew it until now. Since fully accepting and acknowledging the little guy, my approach has shifted, hopefully for the better. I say little guy, but the chimp is actually a massive part of my everyday function. Sometimes he gets out of control and sometimes I can control the little guy; just depends who manages to receive the information first. 
 
I received the book The Chimp Paradox: The Mind Management Programme for Confidence, Success, and Happiness as a Christmas gift from my partner, who is an eyewitness of my attempts to find new books to read.
 
I am not an avid reader by any means, but every year I try to read at least one book a month; this year my goal is to increase this to at least one book a week. Therefore, I will attempt to review some the books I have read throughout the year.

Prof Steve Peters explains the struggle that takes place within your mind and then shows how to apply this understanding to every area of your life so you can:

- Manage yourself and become the person you would like to be

The Chimp Mind Management Model is based on scientific facts and principles, which have been simplified into a workable model for easy use. It will help you to develop yourself and give you the skills, for example, to remove anxiety, have confidence and choose your emotions. The book will do this by giving you an understanding of the way in which your mind works and how you can manage it. It will also help you to identify what is holding you back or preventing you from having a happier and more successful life. 

Each chapter explains different aspects of how you function and highlights key facts for you to understand. There are also exercises for you to work with. By undertaking these exercises you will see immediate improvements in your daily living and, over time, you will develop emotional skills and practical habits that will help you to become the person that you want to be, and live the life that you want to live."

As someone who gained a deep interest in neurology a few years back I can say this book describes the neurological process of the brain to a simplistic level, which allows the reader to understand human thought processes without feeling patronized. 

At the beginning of the book we are introduced to “the Human”, “the Computer”, and the most famous and notorious, “the Chimp”.
 
"The Human" being our responsible selves, "the computer" being our data storage, and then there’s "the Chimp"; our emotional friend who acts out on everything it feels. 
 
Without giving too much of the book away, I’ll try to provide an honest book review. However, the last book review I did was in high school, so we’ll see how this goes.
 
Through use of powerful analogy and synonyms, the reader is explained how each “character” relates to the area of function in the brain, which is something I thoroughly enjoyed. The way the concepts of how the brain works was seamlessly brought together with each chapter increasing an insight into the depths of an individual’s mind. 
 
In order to help the reader understand the brain in a simplistic manner, the book uses planets to illustrate the idea of containers in the brain. I believe this comparison helps us find the relation between the “social beings” that are found in each planet and connects us to aspects of our individual wellbeing. The way it is illustrated is like our solar system. The center being the sun, which in his example, is our self fulfilment. The planets then represent our health, emotions, success, confidence, relationships, to name a few, which all orbit around the sun.
 
Towards the end, the book summarizes your journey of understanding "the self”. This is achieved by wrapping up each planet and proving methods or tasks that each individual can strive for, to improve their Chimp’s behavior, essentially managing their own Chimp. 
 
For those readers who would like to dive deeper into the science of The Chimp Model, the book also offers a section dedicated to the science and terminology associated to each character. 
 
As someone who is constantly striving to improve aspects of my life, I would say this book is definitely an essential read and as it offers a gentler approach to the self. This book is especially great for those readers who are interested in working on their mindset, as it provides the cause, effect, and result of our thinking.
 
In order to fully understand and appreciate the book, the book should be read at a leisurely pace to absorb the information being provided. 
 
I have a feeling this will be a go to book that I will reread in the years to come.
